In the past, you may have heard the suggestion that you should eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. You were told to do this because it would give you a more frequent influx of energy to help keep you more active, and because eating frequently helps your body burn calories more efficiently. In fact, both of those assertions are true. As someone struggling to lose weight, though, you probably couldn’t care less.

Here’s the most important reason that you need to eat all the time: Once you acknowledge the fact that the minute you cut back on your caloric intake, your body metabolism is going to start sending out the psychological and physiological messages that you are starving, your first order of business is to quell that feeling of starvation whenever possible.

So, you need to eat all the time. On average, most people will find that they need to eat something every two to three hours, but this is not a fixed number. You will need to listen to your body and eat whenever you start to feel hungry.

I realize that this concept goes against the grain of most people trying to lose weight. Even now, I sometimes still have to fight back old deep-seated feelings of guilt and shame when other people see me eating. So many of us have always felt that we need to hide the fact that we were hungry, so we snuck food and tried to eat it when others who might judge us were not looking.

It’s time to get over it. If you want to handle your chronic starvation, you are going to have to eat. Explain this to your loved ones and help them understand. Then you will no longer feel the need to hide cookies in your underwear drawer—you will stop and eat a handful of low-salt pretzels or a low-fat granola bar in plain sight of everyone when you get hungry. Forget getting up in the middle of the night to sneak ice cream—you will have already made a point of having a low fat dessert after dinner so you no longer feel the need to lurk around in the dark looking for a midnight sugar fix.

You may end up choosing to have three primary meals and three or four snack breaks throughout the day, or you may find that you eat one or two primary meals and snack more frequently. Or you may come up with your own algorithm that is somewhere in between.

The importance of eating all the time to lose weight was poignantly illustrated to me on a recent trip to the supermarket. I was checking out with my weekly shopping and had filled the conveyor belt with the ingredients for the next week’s healthy meals and snacks.

After I placed the divider stick down, a very heavy young lady came up behind me to check out and placed her basket on the conveyor belt. It was filled to the brim with boxes of Slim-Fast® bars. It was quite a stark contrast next to the four feet of salads, lean meats, nuts, tea, skim milk, fruits, vegetables, and other food items on my side of the divider. I knew that I was going to be eating lots of real food all week, many times a day, and that I would be keeping a reign on my appetite and keeping my weight down.

At the same time, I knew that she would be doing what so many of us have done so many times before. She would try to eat those miniscule bars throughout the day and grit it out until her one “sensible meal.” And for the better part of the day, she would be desperately hungry and completely miserable. Depending on her motivation, she might be able to keep up with the draconian regime for a week or so, but pretty soon she would give into her hunger and return to her old eating habits. Of course, her metabolism will have dropped to accommodate her drastic caloric reduction, and any weight that she lost will fly back on—plus a few extra pounds that her body will pack on to protect itself against her next diet assault.

We have all been there and done that, yet the lure of “fast and easy” promises still too often manages to cloud our better judgment. The key is to train ourselves to make the right choices when we do eat. For me, it took awhile to replace the junk that I used to eat with healthier choices, but I absolutely never allow myself to get too hungry. I always have a healthier choice within arm’s reach.

The reason for this is simple: all my ability to make good choices heads right out the window when I’m ravenous.

“For several years I have dreamed of getting a face lift and thought I would try to aim for my 60th birthday. I ‘m a Cosmetologist Instructor and work with beautiful young women and men every day. We are surrounded with mirrors, and being a woman, I’m always checking to see if I look OK. Many times I would just look away disappointed, thinking about how nice it would be if I just didn’t have all those wrinkles! Like every other women over 40, I too, have placed my hands on my face and pulled the skin back like a very tight ponytail and wished I could look younger. Since I am single and really don’t have a lot of money, I thought it would never happen for me….only wealthy people can afford to get facelifts.

The “before picture” is how I looked a couple of months ago when I first got up in the morning. I am rather good at putting on makeup, but WOW, now I can wear less and still look nice. Some of my good friends have told me that I just look so good…and after I tell them I had a facelift, they are surprised! They say I just look so refreshed and bright. So I’ve decided not to mention it and just take the compliments and say a big “thank you” under my breath for Dr. Quiroz and his staff for doing such a great job!

Does your Fitness Instructor have your best interest in mind, or is she a "Susie Selfish" with only one reason to teach an exercise class: to give HERSELF a good workout?

If you have decided to start the new year by finally making good on your resolution to start going to a group exercise class- congratulations! You will find that a great group fitness class will motivate you to work harder than you ever would on your own and that the ever-changing nature of the classes will keep exercise fresh and interesting all year long.

Just remember, everyone was “the new kid” at one time or another. Just put one foot in front of the other, keep moving and do it. You will be one of the “old pros” in no time.

While most group exercise instructors are wonderful, knowledgeable motivators, every once in awhile you run into an instructor who can actually turn you off from the group exercise experience. Just for fun, I have created the list below of the top ten fitness instructor types that you will want to avoid like the plague.

If you go to a class and your fitness instructor matches any of the following descriptions, don’t give up. Try another class with another teacher until you find a good fit. The benefits to your health make it worth the effort!

1. Susie Selfish: Your group fitness instructor runs into class, barely throws a glance to her students then proceeds to turns the music on at a such a quick tempo that you practically trip over your own feet trying to keep up with her.  Susie Selfish is there for one reason and one reason only: to give herself a good workout, oblivious of the students and the varying fitness levels present in her class.

 2. Critical Chris: He cannot tolerate mistakes or bad form, so Critical Chris will make sure that he singles you out by name so that he can point out the flaws in your technique to the whole class.

3. Jealous Jamie: After a few routines Jealous Jamie has figured out that there is a student in class who is potentially more fit than she is. So J.J. pulls all the most complicated routines from her arsenal to try to trip up the student that they now consider to be an adversary.

4. Shirley Shshsh: Shirley has a quiet, soft personality and that’s the way she plays her music during a group fitness class, as well. Trying to do aerobics to the sound of near silence is about as motivating as watching paint dry.

5.  Chatty Cathy:  She spends so much time talking about her ever burgeoning social agenda that Chatty Cathy doesn’t even bother to cue the routines leaving her students lost and confused.

6. Absent Allen:  He puts such a low priority on teaching his scheduled class that he constantly has to call in other instructor to sub for him. When you show up to Allen’s class, it’s like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.

7. Winded Wendy: She’s out of shape so she takes long breaks in between cardio routines to make music changes and let the class “catch their breath”.

8. Arnie Anonymous: Arnie never bothers to learn any of his students names and addresses them with cute made-up names like, “Hey you in the hat”, or “Our friend in the corner in the orange shirt”.

9. Lazy Leticia:  She has a busy life outside the gym so Lazy Leticia just keeps doing the same routines week after week until her classes become so boring that they are making an hour jog on the treadmill start to look interesting.

10. Dark Darla: She comes into class with a scowl on her face, teaches the class while barking out the cues and glares at any student who tries to come too close into her circle of trust. Dark Darla needs to go back to making her day job a full-time endeavor.

“I have struggled with obesity all my life. Finally after three kids and in my late twenties I decided to do something about it…… after two weight loss surgeries later my body had finally lost all my excess weight…so I should have been ecstatic right?? Liposculpture (Lipoplasty/Suction Lipectomy)

Tummy Tucks

This major surgical procedure is typically performed with general or local anesthesia and a sedative. For mothers, a tummy tuck can offer more than a tigher stomach, it can also improve posture and help back pain

New evidence suggests that an abdominoplasty, also referred to as a tummy tuck, is helping patients in areas beyond just improving self-esteem. The procedure, which tightens the abdominal region by removing excess skin and unsightly fat deposits, has been found to improve back pain as well.

“My peers have done research on women with loose abdominal wall musculature and back pain problems, and found a statistically significant improvement on pain after an abdominoplasty,” said  Dr. Carlos Castaneda, a Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgeon for CosMed Clinic in Mexico.

“It was attributed to the rectus abdominis muscles plicature, documented by an improvement on x-ray measures taken from the lumbosacral spine. Translating all this is, basically better standing posture, ” explained Dr. Castaneda.
